Today sligtly more than half of the world’s total population is living in cities. This proportion is expected to increase to 66 per cent by 2050. Most of this increase will be concentrated in Africa and Asia. Cities such as Tokyo, Delhi, Shanghai, São Paulo, Mumbai and Mexico City are the largest cities with over 20 million inhabitants. The concentration of large cities is particularly prevalent in India and China.
